APC denounces brutal demolition of slum in Mumbai

Days After Violent Dispersal, Farmers Go Back to Congress

MANILA — Farmers’ groups trooped to the House of Representatives in Quezon City Tuesday to denounce the violent dispersal of their camp-out outside the south gate of the Batasan Pambansa Complex last Friday.

“We condemn the violent dismantling of our camp-out. Instead of legislating a genuine land reform program, they dispersed our ranks,” Danilo Ramos, secretary-general of Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP), said in Filipino.

Agriculture remains a cornerstone of the WTO Doha Round, and WTO remains a major structure which disadvantages and harms farmers in the global economy. In the negotiations, developing countries in the “G20” seek to reduce tariffs and subsidies in the developed countries to gain more access to their markets. At the same time, a group of developing countries defends farmers’ interests by proposing certain exemptions from the tariff cuts, as well as the ability to raise tariffs in the event of import surges which cause severe damages to developing country farmers (this group is the G33).

Manila, Philippines - On May 22, 2009, elements of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and security guards of the House of Representatives (HOR) brutally demolished the Rural People’s Camp-out initiated by the members of the Asian Peasant Coalition (APC) in the Philippines: such as the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP), PAMALAKAYA (National Federation of Small Fiserfolks of the Philippines), AMIHAN (National Federation of Peasant Women) and UMA (National Union of Agricultural Workers), together with KASAMA-TK (KMP’s regional chapter in Southern Tagalog).

Peasant campout, violently dispersed!

On its 40th day, the rural people's camp-out, led by Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas, for the passage of the Genuine Agrarian Reform Bill (GARB), is violently dispersed.

Although the farmers and their supporters put up a vigorous resistance, the police, with their truncheons and shields, succeeded in carrying out the House order of dismantling and destroying the front structure and dispersing the farmers. Nine people were injured, including Antonio Flores, KMP Auditor.
