APC Calls for the Implementation of Social Welfare and Security Measures

Dear APC members, friends and network,

We would like to share with you the highlights of the workshops on “Advocacy for Peasants Social Welfare and Security Empowerment” which was sponsored by the Asian Peasant Coalition (APC)  The event was supported by Action Aid International and it was held in Indonesia and India on November and December 2011.

The workshop aims to advocate through legislative measures the expansion of social security law for old age, health insurance and better working conditions for the benefit of the poor peasants, agricultural workers and peasant women; and awareness raising for the need for genuine land reform that will give peasants the control to land and all productive resources that will eliminate the violation to their social rights.

NEWS RELEASE,  May 16, 2012 -  The militant peasant group Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) and the National Federation of Sugar Workers (NFSW – Negros) today assailed the government-funded rebel group Revolutionary Proletarian Army – Alex Boncayao Brigade (RPA-ABB) for brazen human rights violations against farmers in the province of Negros Occidental and called on President Aquino to disband what they described as “bandit group.”

Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) is a democratic and militant movement of landless peasants, small farmers, farm workers, rural youth and peasant women. It has effective leadership over a 2 million rural people with 65 provincial chapters and 15 regional chapters nationwide. It was founded on July 1985 and a founding member of the Asian Peasant Coalition (APC) in 29th March 2003.

KMP Spearheaded National Small Coconut Farmers’ Summit

Philippines -- Two hundred (200) small coconut farmer-leaders across the country assembled in Lucena City, Quezon last March 14 and 15, 2012 declaring their resolve to strengthen the ranks of coconut farmers and to reclaim the multi-billion coco levy funds and assets, which is now estimated to be 200 Billion Pesos, from the control of Noynoy Aquino’s uncle, San Miguel Corporation chair Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco, Jr.
