The Asian Peasant Coalition (APC) warmly congratulates the success of the South Asian Women Peasant’s Conference on Right to Land, Empowerment and Liberation which was held last January 20-21, 2009 and organized by All Nepal Peasants' Federation (ANPFa) in Collaboration with South Asia Alliance for Poverty Eradication (SAAPE).
The Conference brought to fore the critical issues faced by women in South Asia . Among them are: 1) the deplorable situation of refugees in Bhutan - especially the women, 2) employment crisis and women's critical situation in Bangla society, 3) deprivation of land to women in Pakistan, 4) unjust treatment of peasant women in Nepal.
Events such as this which greatly highlights the issues of women are indeed the first step towards women emancipation and empowerment. Recognizing their problems helps to formulate the needed solutions and policies to address them. It also underscores the parallelisms between the conditions of women in different Asian countries, most especially peasant women who are even more oppressed than their male counterparts.
APC further hopes that more conferences on women issues will be held, to help abolish the feudal and patriarchal cultures that still dominate our society.
