Here is a photo essay on "Farmers' and advocates protest that marked the launch of IRRI's 50th anniversary on 17 November 2009 in Laguna, Philippines" done by Vlady Rivera from GRAIN.
At least 200 people, mostly peasants, and members of the Peasant Movement of the Philippines (KMP), Kalipunan ng mga Samahang Magbubukid sa Timog Katagalugan (KASAMA-TK), Philippine Network of Food Security Programs (PNFSP), Farmers and Scientist for the Development of Agriculture (MASIPAG) led the protest co-sponsored by National Network of Agrarian Reform Advocates (NNARA)-Youth, RESIST (Resistance and Solidarity against Agrochem TNCs) and Asian Peasant Coalition (APC).
The group calls for the abolition of IRRI and the implementation of genuine agrarian reform.
The protest coincides with the FAO World Food Summit in Rome from November 16-18, 2009 and the the parallel forum dubbed :Peoples' Food Sovereignty Forum" from November 13 to 17, 2009.
