Task for FAO in transforming Agriculture for Nutrition and Sustainable Food Security by MONLAR

Sat, 12/17/2011 - 09:32 -- apc secretariat

This paper was written by Sarath Fernando of Movement for National Land and Agricultural Reform (MONLAR) from Sri Lanka. The MONLAR is a member of the Asian Peasant Coalition (APC).

Mr. Fernando wrote this document after the FAO Conference on the theme "Nutrition Sensitive Food Production for Sustainable Food Security" held in Bangkok, Thailand from December 7-8, 2011. It was attended by many government, NGO and private sector representatives. The conference discussions were largely presentations of plans of various governments to meet malnutrition. There was no analysis of why there is such a failure in malnutrition in most countries. The Private sector proposals would only make the situation worse

Mr. Fernando stated that during the conference, he tried to make the point that ecological agriculture by small farmers was the effective way out. Since there was no time and opportunity to make this point sufficiently he wrote this document.

In the latter part he tried to use the experiences of Sri Lanka, especially MONLAR, to show the tremendous potential we have. This document tries to say what tasks FAO has to play if it is to play a useful role.
