Tamil Nadu Womens’ Forum (TNWF) vehemently condemns the court arrest of volunteers and the noted actor, the Social Rights Activist Amala. The volunteers have taken action on the hazards of GM field rice trial, in Chinna Kanjarala village of Patancheru in Andhra Pradesh, India.

The campaign against Bayer’s, GM rice field trial has been a continuous struggle. The villagers have demanded the right to save food and the Indian government to be responsible in supporting the citizens, instead of issuing unwarranted charges of over 35 individuals including the general public and the media who are present in this vicinity. The charges against the activists are trespassing, causing damage and even criminal intimidation (under Sec. 427, 447, 506 read along with 34 of the Indian Penal Code).

Safety tests were done on BT brinjal and have proved that BT brinjal has presented a serious risk for human and animal health. Dr. Gilles Eric Seralini, from the University of Caen, France says the release should be forbidden.

Hundreds of sheep and goat died in Warangal district of Andhra Pradesh, India eating BT Cottons stalks and leaves. No scientific proofs are evident to disprove the death of the sheep and goats.

TNWF strongly condemn the Indian Government for planning to release 175 GM varieties. GM food grains are from 41 different crops. In which rice is the most researched crop of the lot as more than 25 varieties of GM rice are being experimented.

We request you to FAX and pressurize BAYER to see that we are free from GM poisoning.
