Manila, Philippines - On May 22, 2009, elements of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and security guards of the House of Representatives (HOR) brutally demolished the Rural People’s Camp-out initiated by the members of the Asian Peasant Coalition (APC) in the Philippines: such as the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP), PAMALAKAYA (National Federation of Small Fiserfolks of the Philippines), AMIHAN (National Federation of Peasant Women) and UMA (National Union of Agricultural Workers), together with KASAMA-TK (KMP’s regional chapter in Southern Tagalog).

On April 17, the Year of Rice Action (YORA) was publicly launched in Nepal and simultaneously commenced in 14 countries in Asia. The inception of YORA is in time for the 50th anniversary of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). The YORA theme "Rice is Life and Livelihood! 50 Years of IRRI is Enough!" signifies our strong protest against IRRI and its control in agriculture.

April 17, Pokhara City, Nepal: 21 peasant organisations representing rice farmers, cereal crop peasants, milk producers, tea farmers, fisher folks, pastoralists, women farmers, villagers, etc. gathered in Tutunga Village for the regional launch of the People's Year of Rice Action (YORA) on April 17, the International Day of Peasants' Struggle.

On April 17, "International Peasants Day", Aliansi Gerakan Reforma Agraria (AGRA) conducted a forum in collaboration with the Institute for Global Justice (IGJ) in Jakarta and staged a mass action in South Sulawesi to start a year-round of activities for the Year of Rice Action (YORA) in Indonesia.

After announcing its partnership with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) located in the Philippines , DuPont is now in agreement with the Indonesian Center for Rice Research (ICRR), giving the former the latter access to test and commercialize ICRR inbreds and hybrids. The Asian Peasant Coalition (APC), the Asia-wide alliance of peasant groups criticized this aggressive move of DuPont as it targets rice agriculture of Asian countries.

The Asian Peasant Coalition (APC) supports its member-organizations in the Philippines such as the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP), PAMALAKAYA-Pilipinas, AMIHAN (National Federation of Peasant Women), Unyon ng Manggagawa sa Agrikultura (UMA) and the entire Filipino peasantry in commemorating the 22nd anniversary of Mendiola Massacre.
